The R4 DS Card – Find Out What An R4 Can Do For Your Nintendo DS and DSi
My purpose for this article is to explain just what an R4 DS card is, and equally as important, how it compares to the newer R4i SDHC Card for the Nintendo DSi console.
So just what is this R4 DS Card? Think of it as a micro sd card adapter. It will let you use micro SD cards in your Nintendo DS or Nintendo DSi console in order to store and load your games, apps, music, movies and even ebooks. For those of you who may not know what the R4 DS Card is, or what an NDS or Console flash card is, it has been around for some time – with similar cards for older game systems like the Gameboy Advance, Gamboy color, Super NES and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. Virtually every game system has had these homebrew type cards. However, the fact that the r4 ds card uses low cost micro sd cards to store and load files, in place of built in flash memory, users have access to tremendous amounts of storage in the form of these inexpensive flash cards.
Many online websites offer the R4 DS for sale, but there are many sites that sell fake or clone cards, because they are sold at low prices, and are not really the R4 DS Card that I am talking about here. While you can get them rather cheaply, the fact is that in the case of the R4DS, you get what you pay for. Since the card has become as popular as it has, many companies have made their own “r4ds” versions – they are not real, nor do they provide the same support or compatibility with about 40% of the games and applications out there, which means you will be in possession of a card that will work – but not quite how it should.
Some of your are probably wondering just what kinds of games you can actually play on your Nintendo DS with the R4 DS. Well, pretty much anything and everything. All the homebrew roms and applications that are out there are 100% compatible with the r4. There are entire communities of amateur / homebrew developers and programmers creating and releasing games and applications for the Nintendo DS and DSi that will work on the r4 DS Cards.

Don’t worry, this is the best part because the R4 DS will have you doing a whole lot of things that have nothing to do with video games on your nintendo ds. Naturally, you’ll be able to plall of your games of course. But you’ll also be able to watch movies on your DS, listen to, and store all of your Mp3 music, read ebooks, and even show off you favorite digital photos. It’s truly an all in one add on accessory for the DS and DS lite.
And now, to explain the difference between the R4 DS and the R4i Cards.
The R4i SDHC card is essentially the same as an R4DS. It offers you all of the same things, except you’ll now be able to enjoy all of the benfits of this flash card on your nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL systems. you’ll be up and running in no time. And the R4i SDHC is also 100% backwards compatible, which means you can actually use it on not only your Nintendo DSi system, but your trusty older Nintendo DS and DS lite consoles. You’ll be able to watch the same movies, read the same eBooks, and take your Mp3 music with you too.
